Hints
If anyone tells you they have never had a virus on their PC, don't believe them!
Here are a few basic rules to follow - a kind of a "good house-keeping" guide to help you maintain the privacy of your email and to recognise the kind of file which might carry a virus.

Passwords
We recommend that you change your password on a regular basis. Passwords must be at least five (5) characters long, and can be alphanumeric. Do not pick obvious words or proper names that can be guessed. Believe it or not, some people really do use the word "password" for a password! Try and mix letters and numbers. Be careful if you write them down and don't reveal your password to anyone.
Remember that passwords are case-sensitive.
Infection
Protect yourself from the occasional pitfalls of the Internet by taking the following steps:
- Download the most current browser versions.
- Download security patches for email clients such as Outlook Express
- Download a current version of desktop virus scanning software from McAfee, Symantec and Trend Microsystems
- Download free software eg. AVG
Viruses
Always keep your virus checker updated. To check the current state of your PC, click on this link to the Trend Micro© site and run their "Housecall" virus checker.
Spam Mail
Avoid spam by:
- Never replying to mail from anyone who is not known to you
- Resisting the impulse to respond to amazing offers
- Setting up a filter to block incoming email when the "To", "CC", or "BCC" fields do not match your email address
- Logging out of your email account before browsing to other Internet sites or open a new browser window to surf in.
- Using the most current version of your operating system.
- Using spam filtering software such as MailWasher, often to be found on the free CD with computer magazines . Alternatively, go to the MailWasher website
